In the remote valleys of the Accursed Mountains, where ancient shepherds’ trails cross borders three times in a single day, every run becomes a journey through Europe’s last true wilderness.
Here, in a land where peaks pierce clouds and crystal alpine lakes mirror medieval monasteries, you’ll push your limits on technical mountain passes before descending to villages where centuries-old customs and legendary Balkan hospitality await.
Welcome to the Balkans! We’ll gather at Dubrovnik airport and waste no time hitting the road towards the stunning village of Kotor situated directly on the shores of the Bay of Kotor. As we wind our way through the countryside, you’ll get your first taste of the breathtaking landscapes that await us. We’ll arrive at our beautiful villa in this picturesque town as we settle in, enjoy a welcome dinner, and brief you on the exciting week ahead.
Today we head high into the hills above the Bay of Kotor for a stunning trail run on Mount Vrmac. This ridge separates Kotor and the neighboring city of Tivat, offering continuous views from both sides of the bay. After a steep climb and descent you will be rewarded with a delicious lunch in a small village only accessible by foot. From there it’s an afternoon of swimming, exploring the city, and an evening boat cruise bringing you directly to dinner along the bay.
We’ll ride the cable car up from the coast into Lovćen National Park, one of Montenegro’s most important natural and cultural landmarks and considered the birthplace of the Montenegrin state. Our route takes you on a mix of double and single track overlooking the Adriatic Sea, passing an old WWII-era monument along the way, finishing at a mountain café for lunch before departing for Albania. Now it’s time to settle into the mountain rhythm as we come into the Theth Valley.
Today kicks off our journey deeper into the Accursed Mountains of the Dinarica mountain range. With massive peaks and deep river valleys surrounding the region, we’ll move through the challenging mountain terrain together as a group, climbing to the iconic and breath-taking mountain pass before descending into the neighboring valley of Valbona.
With a reluctant departure from the beauty of Valbona we’ll embark on a challenging, yet breathtaking group hike for our biggest mountain day yet! Moving through the Dinaric mountains, we will start in Albania and hike across the border back and forth to Montenegro not once, twice, but three times. Ascending high mountain passes with sweeping views of iconic peaks, jumping in crystal-clear alpine lakes, navigating technical and rocky terrain and descending to the neighboring valley… today’s a big one!
Tired yet? We hope so! After some massive days out in the mountains, we aren’t done quite yet! Waking to the fresh mountain air with surrounding peaks in the Grebaje Valley, we’ll set out on a steep, yet stunning loop up to three towering mountain peaks, offering 360-degree views in every direction. After the run we’ll shower and enjoy lunch before a scenic transfer to our final stay: a glamping eco-resort near Lake Skadar.
Our final running day offers a striking change of scenery: Lake Skadar, the largest lake in the Balkans, shared between Montenegro and Albania and known for its dramatic karst mountains, water lily fields, and over 280 bird species. After our big mountain climbs, this runnable route will be a welcome change. Afterward, we’ll grab lunch along the water followed by a relaxed boat cruise on the lake — don’t forget your swimsuit! In the evening we’ll gather for our final dinner and awards.
As our adventure comes to an end, we’ll enjoy one last breakfast together before transferring back to Dubrovnik airport.
I had an amazing time! The runs were all unique and very scenic with plenty of time available to take pictures and enjoy the views. I loved the isolated and cozy feel of all the places we stayed on the trip. I also really appreciated that we stayed at all the locations for two nights, as it felt more relaxing. This is my second Rogue Expeditions trip and I will definitely be back for more. Every experience is so unique and I always meet such friendly and interesting people.
Such an amazing region of the world! My recent Alpe-Adria trip was my third Rogue Expeditions adventure and it was perfect. The overall beauty of the places we drove, the choices of the individual runs, and the non-running activities couldn’t have been chosen better. Running along Lake Bohinj, rafting in the Soca River, and swimming in the Adriatic Sea were my favorites, but I loved it all. I enjoyed every moment and am already planning next year’s travel with Rogue Expeditions
Excellent trip and holiday combining my love of running in different and stimulating locations whilst enjoying post run experiences in a new country. Everything ran like clockwork, the camaraderie built through the week and of course the culinary aspect of the entire 8 days was first class to the point where one might have mistaken the package as a cultural and culinary journey with much needed beautiful running workouts the following day! Highly recommend this trip.
This was my 2nd Rogue trip. The Alpe-Adria trip was talked up before I signed on and yet it somehow still exceeded expectations- this trip was glorious! The meals are next level, views are gorgeous, the planning (including adapting plans to the inevitable unexpected occurrences) is perfect, and the fantastic company on the trip may have still been the best part. 10/10, definitely recommend.

This Balkans run tour is designed for experienced runners with a good fitness level. The longest run is about 9 miles with significant elevation gain, and some days involve long hikes up to 12 miles with 4,000 ft of elevation gain. Multiple distance options are always available for our run days, but the two days of hiking are point to point and require the fitness to complete the full route (or skip and transfer by van to the next accomodation). You should be comfortable with consecutive days of mountain terrain and significant elevation changes.
Expect diverse and challenging terrain throughout your Balkans running tour. You’ll encounter mountain trails, forest paths, rocky terrain, and some road running. The routes include single-track trails, dirt roads, and possibly some paved sections. Be prepared for rough and technical terrain, especially in the Albanian Alps.
Accommodations vary throughout your Balkan running adventure, including guest houses, hotels, and glamping resorts. Expect comfortable but sometimes basic accommodations, especially in more remote areas.
Weather can vary significantly given the diverse terrain. Generally, expect mild to warm days and cooler nights. Mountain weather can be unpredictable, so be prepared for sudden changes and potential rain during your Balkans running tour.
Albanian and Montenegrin cuisine is hearty and perfect for fueling mountain activities. You’ll feast on an array of traditional mountain dishes of lamb or goat, fresh seafood near the coast and fresh vegetables.
