Trip Grading System

A guide to finding the trip that matches your preferred vacation style and experience level best.

There is no required pace on any of our running trips. All speeds are welcome. Find out why your pace doesn’t matter.

Level 1

Who’s it for?
These trips are designed to be accessible for every type of runner—whether you’re new to trail running, an experienced road runner, a hiker who prefers technical terrain, or a seasoned ultramarathon runner. Most routes are non-technical and considered runnable. Daily mileage will range from 5 to 12 miles.

On Level 1 trips, shorter options are offered every day. Support vans may be stationed along the running routes to meet runners for refills or early exits if needed.

For experienced runners, these trips offer satisfying mileage and elevation without the demands of highly technical terrain or steep ascents.

What to expect:

  • Daily mileage: 5–12 miles (8–20 km), with flexibility to shorten
  • Mostly non-technical trails
  • Moderate elevation gain: around 500–1,500 ft/day (153-457 m/day)
  • Optional rest days and route modifications
  • Total trip mileage: 35-45 miles (56-72 km)

Level 2

Who’s it for?
These trips are best suited for runners with light trail experience or those runners who are eager to take on varied terrain, longer mileage days, or steeper climbing.

These trips are accessible to beginner runners who are comfortable with a physical challenge. These trips are designed for those who welcome Type 2 fun—whether that means powering through a steep climb or simply moving at a slower pace when the trail demands it.

Comfortable accommodations, on-route support, rest and shortened route options ensure the experience caters to less experienced runners, even on the tougher days.

What to expect

  • Daily mileage: typically 6–16 miles (10–26 km)
  • Mixed terrain: mostly non-technical runnable trail with up to 2 days of rocky or more technical sections that may be hiked
  • Elevation gain: up to 1,500 ft/day (457 m) with steeper grades (15–20%) on some days
  • Shorter route or rest-day options available every day
  • Total trip mileage: 40–50 miles (64–80 km)

Level 3

Who’s it for?
These trips are most enjoyed by runners who have some experience in mountain environments or road runners excited by being on trails.

Certain days may have steep ascents and descents, sustained climbs, and rocky, uneven terrain will require hiking for most travelers.

Some days may be more hike than run, depending on conditions. However, over the full trip, they’ll be paired with runnable segments on gravel, road, or smoother trail.

Shorter route options exist on most, but not every route.

What to expect:

  • Daily mileage: typically 6–16 miles (10–25 km)
  • Terrain: rocky, steep, and sometimes technical
  • Elevation gain: up to 3,000 ft/day (915 m), with sustained climbs and descents on some days
  • Some routes are better hiked than run due to terrain and elevation
  • Shorter route or support van options available when terrain allows
  • Total trip mileage: 40–55 miles (64–88 km)
